269 Chickens Killed Per Second

I've been vegan for 10 years, so I'm fairly well informed about the slaughter of animals, but these numbers from Viva! USA are shocking:
Every day, 23 million chickens are killed in the U.S. for food--that’s 269 deaths per second!

We have to stand up for these mistreated birds and take action!

Because this industry is so huge, we took almost a year to collect information and video footage. We traveled to countless chicken sheds in both the winter and summer. We saw literally thousands upon thousands of birds. But despite these vast numbers, it's important to remember one thing: each of these birds is a feeling individual who has endured unspeakable suffering on these farms.

What does a typical chicken farm look like? Your first view is row after row of industrial sheds---there were 27 sheds at one facility we visited. Most people would never imagine ...that these innocuous, sometimes windowless buildings hold living beings, but the sad truth is that each one contains thousands of birds in crowded, filthy conditions. When we opened these sheds on a cold winter day, we were startled by the oppressive heat and smell inside. Only a few small lights broke the darkness, and a combination of dust and feathers filled the air. In some places, conditions were so bad it was hard to take photographs—or even see.

What we could see was horrific. Dead birds littered the floors of the sheds, some looking as if they had been trampled or crushed.

Tragic, but have you ever seen a wheat field after a combine harvester has run through it?

Not pretty.

Thanks for getting the word out, storiesinamerica. Others, go fuck yourselves. Go eat your meat, and continue to rot from the inside out.

I will never be a vegetarian, but I absolutely know "food" animals are treated inhumanely in this country on a large scale. It's horrific.

The solution is not to ban eating "meat" which humans have done since the beginning of time. It is to lessen their consumption of meat (a more vegetarian diet is healthier) and to hold those who raise these animals as a "food" source across the board absolutely accountable to integrate & sustain the animals' environment, to look beyond just the bottom-line, to root themselves in the ways of Nature & not in the Almighty dollar, but this of course is very difficult & has been for quite some time.

My Grandparents were Farmers. I know what I am talking about. Corporate Farming is not Farming the way we know it. These animals live in horrific conditions. The products can change from cow to corn to grass, but in the end it is all the same...humans are humane b/c they care about themselves, their families & the environment. Humans are inhumane b/c they don't. These people are not Farmers, they are criminals at the very least, at the most they are pathological abusers of all living things.

Why do Vegans always feel so self rightous and want to push their views and thoughts on you. I mean the statement " go fuck yourselves. Go eat your meat and continue to rot from the inside out." Where is the scientific proof of rotting from the inside out? My grandfather is 92 years old, has eaten meat, vegetables, nuts, fruit, and whatever else he wanted his entire life. How has he rotted from the inside out. Besides, telling someone to go fuck themselves automatically makes them hate you and think you are a psycho fanatic which does nothing to help the chickens. You have the right to not eat meat just like others have the right to eat meat. What makes you so perfect?

My grandparents had chickens on their farm but not like this I can proudly say that they treated their chickens well. they mostly laid eggs. I remember them running around everywhere and feeding them beans and some corm from the fields and sweet potato(this they stole from the cows) During the day, they went everywhere but at night, they returned to their little shed on their own will.
